Jury finds Flint man guilty on all counts related to 2021 domestic violence incident

FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury has found a Flint man guilty on all counts related to a 2021 assault on his girlfriend in the City of Mt. Morris.

After a two day jury trial, Matthew Anthony Jones, 40, stands convicted on six counts including domestic violence, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of felony firearm second offense. Additionally, Jones faces an enhanced sentence as a habitual offender.

On April 6, 2021, police from the City of Mt. Morris responded to a domestic disturbance call. Upon arrival, police met with the victim who stated that her boyfriend, Matthew Anthony Jones, pointed a gun at her head during an argument and threatened to kill her. She stated that he then fled in his vehicle and gave a description.

Within an hour, Genesee Township Police officers pulled Jones over pursuant to a traffic stop. He was placed under arrest for suspicion of the earlier felonious assault and a subsequent inventory search of his car revealed a loaded pistol matching the description of the firearm used in the assault.

“Sadly, domestic violence is one of the most common and one of the most devastating crimes not only in our community but in communities across the nation,” said Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. “My office is committed to working with our partners in law enforcement and at the YWCA of Greater Flint to stand up for survivors of domestic violence and to take a strong stance in the courtroom against batterers and abusers.”

Leyton added: “I urge anyone who is in an abusive relationship to seek help by calling 9-1-1 in an emergency
situation and to reach out to the YWCA for comprehensive, safe and confidential services by
calling their crisis hotline 24/7 at (810)238-7233.”

Jones faces a mandatory minimum five years in prison for the second offense felony firearm convictions consecutively and preceding the terms of imprisonment for the underlying felony convictions. He will be sentenced on February 28.

Jones has another case pending trial in Circuit Court related to a June 11, 2022 incident involving an assault on another woman in the City of Flint.

He was previously convicted of armed robbery in 2000 and sentenced to prison for a minimum of twelve years.
