Jury finds Flint man guilty for killing stepbrother with a hammer

FLINT — Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury returned a guilty verdict against a Flint man who was charged with killing his stepbrother with a hammer.

Brett Michael Andres, 37, is convicted of first degree premeditated murder in the July 9, 2019 death of his stepbrother, 29-year-old Kip Brian Bowker. The pair lived together on Comanche Avenue in the city of Flint.

According to testimony at trial and police investigative reports, there had been a sense of irritation and tension Andres felt toward Bowker building up for some time and a verbal argument the day of the killing resulted in Andres striking Bowker in the head four times with a hammer. Andres called 9-1-1 to report the incident and the medical examiner’s report later confirmed Bowker’s death as the result of blunt force trauma to the head.

“This was a very sad story and a tragic ending involving two individuals who were not only oommates but stepbrothers,” said Leyton. “While the death of Mr. Bowker cannot be undone, I can only hope that this conviction will help family members take another step toward closure as they continue to grieve the loss of their loved one.”

Andres faces life in prison without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on May 23.
