JURY CONVICTS MT. MORRIS TWP. WOMAN OF MURDER IN FATAL STABBING OF BOYFRIEND

FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury has found a 27-year-old Mt. Morris Township woman guilty of second degree murder in the 2020 fatal stabbing of her boyfriend. Myaja Shabree Simpson was convicted of stabbing to death 29-year-old David Scott, Jr. the evening of October 24, 2020. According to testimony at trial, just after 11 p.m. that evening, Mt. Morris Township police were dispatched to the area of Princeton and Fairhaven in response to reports of a car crash and a victim inside the vehicle gasping for air and bleeding. When police arrived, they found the driver, later determined to be Scott, was deceased and he had sustained what appeared to be a single stab wound to his chest.

Scott’s brother arrived on the scene and directed police to Simpson’s house nearby. When police arrived at her residence, they discovered blood on the stairs leading to a basement apartment where they found Simpson with a garbage bag and blood all around the scene. Inside the garbage bag police found what appeared to be a steak knife. Simpson was arrested at the scene and later charged with Scott’s murder.

Subsequent lab analysis provided important DNA evidence linking both Simpson and Scott.

“As with most cases we try, there were challenges to overcome but in the end, we were able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant killed her boyfriend by stabbing him to death,” said Leyton after the jury came back with its verdict.

“It’s a tragic case but, I am grateful for the jury’s work and their return of a guilty verdict,” Leyton added.

Leyton thanked the diligent work of Assistant Prosecutor Alena Clark, support staff and the hard work of the Mt. Morris Township Police Department.

Simpson faces up to life in prison when she is sentenced.
