FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a jury found a Flint man guilty as charged
on all nine felony counts after shooting another man during an argument.

Cody William Ishmael, 38, is convicted of assault with intent to murder, discharge from a vehicle
causing physical injury, being a felon in possession of a firearm, being a felon in possession of
ammunition, carrying a concealed weapon fourth offens, and four related counts of felony firearm
third offense.

According to testimony at trial, just after 10:30 a.m. on the morning of May 19, 2025, City of Flint Police were dispatched to Leland Street in response to a report of a man being shot. Upon arrival, they found the victim, age 65, had been shot once in the buttocks by a man known to him as Cody Ishmael. Ishmael and the victim had an ongoing feud with one another that led to Ishamel coming to the victim’s home that morning and shooting him as the two were arguing and the victim was heading back into his home. A Ring camera surveillance video captured the incident.

“Once again, we find two individuals who had a beef with one another and one of the individuals decided to settle their differences with a gun,” Prosecutor Leyton said after the verdict was read. “It is debatable whether the beef itself was worth having let alone using a gun to settle the score. We
are very lucky that the victim was not killed.”

Prosecutor Leyton credited his team including Assistant Prosecutor Jonathon Poulos who took the case to trial, secretaries, paralegals and victim advocates with securing justice in the case and applauded the work of the City of Flint police for their diligent investigation from the start.

A sentencing date is scheduled for April 6. Ishmael faces up to life in prison on the most serious charge and a mandatory and consecutive term of 10 years in prison on the felony firearm charges
