Judge rules against Flint Councilman Eric Mays

Written By Jameca Patrick-Singleton

Flint Judge Celeste Bell has issued a ruling in the lawsuit that Senior Councilman Eric Mays filed against the Flint City Council. Mays filed the suit in April, when he claims he was removed from his seat as Flint City Council President illegally.

The judge issued an opinion in the matter, which in part states “If it is the will of the Council to remove Mays from his position as presiding officer, this Court is not authorized to interfere on any ground alleged to the present compliant.”

The removal of Mays occurred after a 6-0 vote, which Mays alleges was illegal because, as the then presiding president of Flint City Council, he had already adjourned the meeting. Mays, councilman for Ward 1, and Jerri Winfrey-Carter, councilperson for Ward 5, were absent from the vote. Councilwoman Tonya Burns, councilperson for Ward 6, abstained from voting.

Mays stated that he is planning to appeal the ruling of Judge Bell.
