Homicides continue to trend downward at 2-year mark of Flint gun violence emergency declaration

FLINT, Mich.—July 2023 marks two years since Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley declared a gun violence emergency, putting the city on a path that would drive the rate of violence crime downward. According to the Flint Police Department, homicides in the city of Flint are down by 26.32% since July 2022.

“We stand firm in our gun violence emergency declaration,” Neeley said. “We are continuing to combat gun violence in our community at the highest level.”

Since January 2023, the Flint Police Department has confiscated about 300 illegal weapons, adding to 2088 that had been confiscated from 2019 to the end of 2022. The Flint Police Department works in partnership with the Michigan State Police to incinerate weapons on a rolling basis.

The Flint Police Department is also working to address hazardous driving and other dangerous traffic violations in Flint. Since January 2023, the Flint Police Department has made 3,582 traffic stops, including 178 so far this month. These traffic stops are part of normal patrols, as well as the result of data-driven targeted enforcement based on the FPD Intelligence Center’s analysis of reckless driving reports.
