Gov. Whitmer Elected to Continue Bipartisan Leadership Role on National Governors Association Executive Committee

Governor Gretchen Whitmer was elected to the National Governors Association (NGA) Executive Committee after a vote by fellow leaders of states and territories. Founded in 1908, the NGA is the bipartisan organization of the nation’s governors, which was formed to share best practices, address issues of national and state interest and share innovative solutions that improve state government and support the principles of federalism.

“It is my honor to continue serving on the NGA’s Executive Committee, where Republicans and Democrats come together to tackle big issues with bold ideas,” Whitmer said. “I will bring a Michigander’s perspective to this national group and I look forward to learning from the diverse group of leaders who are all committed to collaborating on challenges we all face.”

 In addition to Whitmer, the following governors were elected to positions on the NGA Executive Committee:

  • Governor Asa Hutchinson, Arkansas, Chairman;
  • Governor Phil Murphy, New Jersey, Vice Chairman;
  • Governor Kay Ivey, Alabama;
  • Governor Doug Ducey, Arizona;
  • Governor Jared Polis, Colorado;
  • Governor Charlie Baker, Massachusetts;
  • Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, New Mexico.
  • Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York.

Yesterday, on Thursday, July 8, Whitmer was also appointed by President Biden to the Council of Governors, a bipartisan group of governors that addresses matters of homeland defense, the National Guard, disaster response, and other safety & security issues. The Council consists of 10 governors appointed by the president – five from each party – with two governors serving as co-chairs. Governor Whitmer will serve a two-year term.
