The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) is excited to announce its 2nd Annual Countywide Pitch Competition will go on this year… with a twist! The competition will still highlight some of the county’s most innovative high school students as they pitch their business ideas. However, due to the current circumstances, students will create and submit videos of their pitch presentations. The students whose videos earn the highest scores will receive cash prizes!
Genesee County high school students can register and submit video entries online from May 8-17. Pitches can be for a product business, a service business, a social enterprise or technology business. Youth entrepreneurship club advisors will select one winner from each school district. Judges from GISD, Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative and the C. S. Mott Foundation will select five top winners from the district winners. Each district winner will receive a $200 cash card. The five top winners will each receive a $300 cash card.
“Youth entrepreneurship has been proven to improve academic performance, interpersonal skills, job readiness, problem solving and decision-making abilities,” said Sherquanda (Gia) Carroll, youth entrepreneurship coordinator.
“This competition will not only continue the work we’ve been doing in youth entrepreneurship clubs at high schools across Genesee County this school year, but due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19 we’ve opened the competition up to all high school students to help keep students engaged,” Carroll added.
Youth entrepreneurship is a growing initiative in Genesee County designed to spark interest and help boost entrepreneurial mindsets among students. GISD was awarded a grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation to set up youth entrepreneurship clubs at high schools across the county, train participating club advisors and support the countywide pitch competition.
“Our goal is to celebrate the creativity of area students, encourage students to challenge themselves and think about all the possibilities of what they can achieve,” said Steve Tunnicliff, Ph.D., Associate Superintendent of the Genesee Intermediate School District.
“We appreciate the C. S. Mott Foundation’s support for entrepreneurship programs throughout our county and hope this competition will become an exciting tradition in our community that students strive to be part of each year,” Tunnicliff added.
“We are very excited to continue the pitch competition in a unique way this year, and since the competition is open to all Genesee County high school students I encourage students to put their thinking caps on, get their phones and computers out, and take advantage of this opportunity!” Carroll said.
