Vision education and dental screenings new this year
FLINT – As fall quickly approaches, so does flu season, and to help ensure you get your health tuned up, Genesee Health Plan (GHP), along with several community partners, is hosting its annual vaccine and community health appreciation event, “Healthcare Tune Up,” formerly the “Vaccine Drive-Thru Event” from 3-6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25.
The Genesee County community is invited to take advantage of a variety of free health screenings, community resources, health care enrollment and vaccines at the event. Attendees can still drive-thru, roll down their window and roll up their sleeve to receive their flu vaccine provided by Walgreen’s pharmacy. The Genesee County Health Department is providing Tdap, Hepatitis B, HPV and flu vaccines for all ages inside the GHP office.
“We wanted to take a whole health approach to this year’s event by focusing on a variety of health screenings and resources all in one place,” said Shannon Ciszek, communications coordinator of GHP. “Just like how you take your car in for a tune-up to make sure it is running the best, we want to make sure attendees have health coverage, and get a health tune-up with screenings, vaccines and more to make sure they are feeling and running their best.”
New this year-GHP is partnering with Delta Dental to provide oral health screenings. Michigan State University College of Human Medicine medical students will be providing health screenings and “Ask the Doctor”- where attendees can get answers to their health questions. St. Luke N.E.W. Life Eye Clinic staff will also provide vision education.
“As a community, we know that vaccines and regular health screenings are some of the most powerful tools we have to protect and improve overall health,” said Dr. Michela Corsi, medical director of the Genesee County Health Department. “Events like this make an incredible impact because they bring together a variety of vital health services in one place, making it easier for families to access the care and resources they need to stay healthy.”
Genesee Community Health Center is providing Naloxone (NARCAN) training to identify the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and how to safely administer the reversal drug, Naloxone. The Genesee County Health Department will provide confidential Sexually Transmitted Disease (STI) testing and free pizza for those who get tested. ASL interpreters will also be available at the event to assist with communication barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing community, provided by the Communication Access Center for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Free hot dogs, chips and a drink will be provided by B Dogs Specialty Hot Dog Cart. Gift card drawing and giveaways for attendees.
