Genesee District Library meeting the needs of busy parents and caregivers

October 27, 2023 – Flint, MichiganYour comfort matters at the Genesee District Library.

At the Grand Blanc-McFarlen branch, a unique computer workstation lets multi-tasking caregivers take care of business while baby naps or plays in an inviting, safe, educational space right at their side.

“We are delighted to offer this convenience to our patrons,” said Dave Conklin, director of Genesee District Library.

Conklin added: “We offer so much to families that saves them money.  Now we’re offering convenience and comfort as well,” he said.

The Fairfield Parent+Child Carrel looks like a typical computer workstation on one side, but attached is an enclosed baby and toddler space.  Inside that space are a mirror, colorful art, interactive counting and measuring activities, and a peek-a-boo wall.

“Libraries are constantly evolving to meet the needs of the communities they serve,” Conklin continued. “Ideas on how to meet those needs come from a variety of sources. This one happened to come from our Board Chairman, Linda Ryals-Massey.”

The Fairfield Parent+Child library workstation was designed by Sherri Moore and Blake Ratcliffe, founders of TMC, The Makers Creative, a children’s and library furniture company based in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids.
