Genesee Career Institute students win gold in national competition

FLINT – The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) has announced that students from its Genesee Career Institute (GCI) Digital Art, Design & Broadcasting program attended the SkillsUSA National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC) in Atlanta, Georgia, and won gold! At the conference, the talented team of students, including Brianna Anzures (Lakeville), SeLaih Artis (Atherton), and Kayla Reinhardt (Lakeville), participated in the 2022 Promotional Bulletin Board competition. They took on 30 state championship teams from across the United States and came out on top!

The teams in the Promotional Bulletin Board competition were judged in four categories: a national knowledge test, a written report, an oral presentation to a panel of judges and a physically designed and constructed promotional bulletin board. Contestants were challenged to use their creativity to produce a design that brought to life the national theme: United as One. The GCI team first earned a spot in the semi-finals. They advanced to the final round with a score that put them in fourth place overall. For the final round, all scores were cleared, and students had to give one more presentation to the judges.

“I knew our team had what it took to be on that final stage at SkillsUSA, and I sincerely hoped they would receive a medal as a reward for all of their hard work,” said Michael Crawford, SkillsUSA Advisor and GCI Digital Art, Design & Broadcasting Instructor.

Crawford added: “They truly embodied the theme United as One; and against an impressive field of state champions, delivered a sparkling, error-free final performance to win gold. It’s a well-deserved team win achieved by paying attention to details, remaining positive and maintaining a great work ethic.”

After winning the top prize, the GCI students ventured out into the host city. They toured Coke World, the National Center for Civil and Human Rights and the Georgia Aquarium. They also participated in a community service project where bikes were built and presented to members of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Atlanta.

The GCI team’s 2022 win at SkillsUSA marks back-to-back national wins for the Digital Art, Design & Broadcasting program. Congratulations to all the students and their instructor!
