FREE Breast Cancer Awareness Event

In recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Hamilton Community Health Network (HCHN) invites the community to join them for the Second Annual Chat & Chew: Breast Cancer Review on Saturday, Oct. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This free event is held in the Ramsdell Room of the Flint Farmers’ Market, 300 E. 1st Street, Flint, Michigan, 48502, featuring panel discussion, raffles and a fashion show.

HCHN is proud to partner with three organizations to provide a panel of experts who will inform and educate attendees about the stages of breast cancer. University of Michigan Associate Professor and Chief of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Michael Scott Sabel returns this year with insight on current breast cancer research, prevention of the disease, diagnosis and treatment. Laura Sewell is an ABC Certified Post-Mastectomy Fitter at Wright & Filippis in Flint Township. She will speak to women about the services Wright & Filippis offers. Nekeyta Brunson will show women how to use scarves and choose the correct wig after losing hair through chemotherapy. Brunson owns UnCovered, LLC out of Lansing. She offers consultations for women with severe hair-loss.

This free event will also feature fun activities for attendees. Surrounding the presentations and panel discussion, DJ Smuvi will engage attendees with music selections during lunch. She will also help MC the event. Breast Cancer Survivors are welcome to join the Survivor Fashion Show Competition. Survivors are encouraged to show their support by wearing a creative pink outfit while walking the runway. Three women will be honored with the titles “Best Pinkest,” “Most Creative,” and “Best Presentation.” Gift card raffles will also be held throughout the event.

Chat & Chew: Breast Cancer Review was a success last October. Dr. Sabel was the featured speaker for the informational session. During the inaugural event, HCHN announced the Women’s Breast Cancer Clinic through the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The clinic gives individuals with a family history of breast disease, or with abnormal mammograms the opportunity to receive expanded specialty services in Flint. Patients are seen at Hamilton’s Main Clinic at 2900 N. Saginaw Street. The clinic takes appointments on the first Friday of every month, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. To schedule an appointment, patients should call 810-406-4943.
