Flint Councilwoman Eva Worthing, who represents the city’s 9th Ward, has apologized for using the word “ghetto” in a city council committee meeting, held on May 4. The comment was made off of the microphone but was called out by her colleague from the 6th Ward, Councilwoman Tonya Burns. Burns told Worthing not to use the word “ghetto,” and said it was a racist term.
Worthing, in a statement posted on social media stated in part “I am very sorry for my choice of words. Those who know my heart know I would NEVER ever use someone’s race to degrade them. In this case, I said it because I was threatened in a very unprofessional manner by Jerri Winfrey-Carter. I used the term to describe actions by Carter that I found extremely unsophisticated.”
The incident occurred during a discussion in which 7th Ward Councilwoman Allie Herkenroder was attempting to amend a motion.
