On January 2, Kevelin Jones, superintendent of Flint Community Schools, issued a letter to Flint Community Schools families, which was posted on the school district’s website.
In it, Jones informed the families that due to the rise in COVID-19 numbers across Genesee County and out of an abundance of caution, all schools in the Flint Community Schools district will be closed to scholars on Monday, January 3 and Tuesday, January 4.
“We will be shifting to remote distance learning Wednesday through Friday – with scholars expected to participate in their regular school schedule online,” Jones stated. “Our teachers will be reporting to school on Monday and Tuesday to prepare for distance learning classes later in the week to ensure a smooth transition to remote learning for our scholars.”
Jones apologized for the late notice and any inconvenience this caused families, adding he and others had hoped to be able to return for in-person learning after the holiday break.
“Unfortunately, with the rising number of cases across the county, we believe it is in the best interest of our school community to delay the return to in-person learning at this time,” he said. “We will continue to monitor the number of cases and work with local health officials to determine when it is safe to welcome our scholars back for in-person learning. At Flint Community Schools, the safety and well-being of our scholars is and will always be our first priority.”
Jones suggested if there are questions regarding this matter, parents or other family members do not hesitate to reach out to their children’s principal at the school.
He thanked the families for their continued commitment to Flint Community Schools and for serving as the district’s partner in their children’s education.
