Flint area man accused of murdering his roommate with machete found incompetent to stand trial

By Tanya Terry

A Flint Township man appeared before Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Mark W. Latchana on Thursday, Jan. 18, for a pretrial hearing after being accused of murdering his roommate with a machete in 2022.

The 36-year-old man, Terrence Haywood, has been found incompetent to stand trial after a report was read that had been put together by a doctor with the Center for Forensic Review in Saline.

Haywood was charged with the murder of 34-year-old Cole Campbell, whose body was discovered frozen in almost a foot of snow on Feb. 1, 2022, near the home Campbell shared with Haywood. Campbell’s body was found about a week after he was reported missing to the Flint Township Police Department.

On May 22, Haywood’s competency will be revisited.

If found guilty, Haywood, who is currently at Genesee County Jail, could spend up to life in prison.
