Fire in historic Genesee County Courthouse being investigated

On September 4, 2021, there was a fire in the historical Genesee County Courthouse located
at 900 S Saginaw St.

The origins of the fire are still under investigation. Luckily, the fire was contained to the 2 nd
Floor Clerk’s Office – Vital Records area. There is significant fire and water damage in that
office as well as further water damage on the first floor from the sprinkler system.

To allow for appropriate remediation of all damage, the Genesee County Courthouse will be
closed to the public on Tuesday September 7, 2021. The public will not be allowed to enter
the Courthouse on that date.

Staff will be notified by their supervisors as to whether they should report on Tuesday.
Stay tuned for updates on the progress of the remediation Tuesday afternoon.
