Fighting at Southwestern Academy being investigated

Incident at Southwestern Academy: Early Dismissal, Fights in Progress, and Ongoing Investigation

Flint, MI — At approximately 8:45 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11, Flint police officers responded to Southwestern Academy following reports of several fights in progress. Upon arrival, officers located at least three separate groups of individuals engaged in fights in different locations inside the school.

Key details:
At least two individuals were arrested and transported to the Flint Police Department for processing.
The heating system at Southwestern Academy was not operating properly, leading school administration to implement an early dismissal.
While students were awaiting bus transportation, several additional altercations occurred. No injuries had been reported to police at publication time.
The investigation into the causes and circumstances surrounding the fights is ongoing.

The Flint Police Department emphasizes the importance of nonviolent conflict resolution.

Detective Tyrone Booth stated, “It is crucial for students to find nonviolent ways to resolve conflicts. We must come to the realization that violence is not the answer nor is it acceptable.”

The department affirms its commitment to the Flint school system:

Officers will maintain a visible presence in the district.
Efforts will continue to build positive relationships with students and staff.
The department will continue to promote and introduce conflict-resolution techniques with the goal of reducing assaults among students in the district.
