Extremely cold temperatures are in the forecast for Genesee County for the next few days. When temperatures drop below normal levels it is important to stay safe and warm. Individuals can protect themselves by:
• Wearing cold-weather appropriate attire.
• Seek warm shelter.
• Limit time spent outdoors.
People who do not have a warm place to stay might get sick from the cold. If you or someone you know needs a warm place to stay, you can contact any of these community resources for options:
• Catholic Charities Sister Claudia Burke Center, 812 Root St, Flint (810) 265-7025
• My Brother’s Keeper, 101 N Grand Traverse St, Flint (810) 234-1163
• Carriage Town Ministries, 605 Garland St, Flint (810) 233-7878
• Shelter of Flint, 924 Cedar St, Flint (810) 239-5433
Serious health problems can result from prolonged exposure to the cold. The most common cold related problems are hypothermia and frostbite. Individuals most at-risk of cold related injury (CRI) are (1) elderly people (2) babies sleeping in cold bedrooms and (3) homeless persons, bikers, hunters, etc.
To keep our community safe, we encourage people to check in on others. Anyone who feels that they are experiencing a CRI should seek medical attention as soon as possible.
