Despite claims on multiple websites, articles and a Michigan House proclamation that Mayor Sheldon Neeley graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Saginaw Valley University, he did not. The discovery, made by Fox news digital media was confirmed by Saginaw Valley State University. According to the University Neeley attended the school but did not graduate. At one time, the claim that he had earned a bachelor’s degree was included in Neeley’s bio on the city of Flint website for over a year but was removed in July of 2021.

Neeley, has served in several elected seats including city councilman, state representative and currently as mayor of Flint. Neither position has a minimum education requirement.

A statement released by the City of Flint states in part: “Mayor Neeley has been clear from the beginning that he received his associate’s degree from Delta College and that he studied Communication at Saginaw Valley University, but did not complete a bachelor’s degree” The statement went on to say “Any legislative biography that said otherwise was a compounded oversight made by a political staffer”.

Neeley is currently running for re-election against former mayor Dr. Karen Weaver. The election is Tuesday November 8, 2022. Dr. Weaver has said that she believes that this was not simply an oversight.
