Dr. Pamela Pugh’s Statement on Michigan Leaders Fighting Back to  Defend Educational Rights Against Federal Threats

The Michigan State Board of Education, in partnership with the Michigan Department of Education, remains steadfast in our commitment to uphold the rights of all children and families as enshrined in our State and U.S. Constitution. The Board commends Attorney General Dana Nessel and State Superintendent Michael Rice for their swift action against recent federal orders that threaten to destabilize educational funding and the well-being of our students.

Recent executive actions by President Donald Trump, including threats to end birthright citizenship, threats to eliminate the U.S. Department of Education and attempts to halt federal funding, pose severe disruptions to the continuity of essential services within our schools. These threats are compounded by the potential for ICE raids on school grounds, which further endanger the safe and supportive environments crucial for learning.

In response to this uncertainty, Dr. Rice has issued important guidance to all pre-K-12 public school districts in Michigan, reinforcing their obligations under the Plyler v. Doe decision. This guidance serves as a critical reminder of our educators’ duty to protect access to education for all students, regardless of their citizenship and immigration status, and to ensure that schools remain sanctuaries free from undue enforcement actions.

Two significant lawsuits involving Michigan as a plaintiff were filed recently by Attorney General Nessel, which challenged the legality of the Trump administration’s orders. Dr. Rice, representing the Michigan Department of Education, provided declarations filed in the two cases supporting these legal actions. This rapid legal response underscores the urgency of restoring stability to our educational funding streams.

The Board’s collective response to these federal challenges will remain strong, swift, and united to safeguard our children’s futures. The Board stands with educators, parents and leaders across the state and nation, steadfast in urging the administration to prioritize the health and education of our children over partisan considerations. Our children are not bargaining chips; they are the future leaders of this country.

As this situation evolves, the Board remains vigilant and prepared to provide updates and support to our communities across the state. its partnership in supporting the educational and emotional well-being of Michigan’s children has never been more critical. The Board is committed to taking all necessary steps to maintain our schools as sanctuaries of learning and safety, shielded from political disputes.
