Can They Do It Again? Yes U-Conn!

By: Alex LaGrone

The University of Connecticut Huskies men and women's basketball teams both won the national championships in the same year for the second time. The Huskies men's team beat a young and talented Kentucky Wildcats 60-54 in the NCAA championship game. Led by second year head coach Kevin Ollie, who guided the No. 7 seed team to a victory that hardly anyone picked to win the national title.

The Huskies did it with a tough and stingy defense and timely scoring led by the tournament's Most Outstanding Player guard, Shabazz Napier and tight guard Ryan Boatright. "We came here to play said Shabazz; we didn't listen to any doubters."

The No. 8 seeded Wildcats came into the game with five starting freshmen who gave U Conn all they could handle. James Young, who was born here in Flint, led the Wildcats in scoring with 20 points. He played for Troy H.S his freshman thru  junior years and Rochester H.S. in Rochester, Michigan his senior year.

Ollie, 41, was hand picked by former legendary coach Jim Calhuon, who won three titles during his  career. Many eyebrows were raised due to Ollie's limited time as a coach. He coached only two seasons as a member of Calhoun's staff, but he was ready for the challenge (man was he ever ready). U Conn finished with a 32-8 record. U Conn now has 4 men's national basketball titles.

The lady Huskies came into their championship game undefeated at 39-0 and beat the 37-0 Norte Dame's Fighting Irish team by the score of 79-58. The Huskies dominated the Fighting Irish from start to finish. They scored at will in the paint with it's size advantage. Breanna Stewart's 21 points and Stefanie Dolson's 17 points made it look easy. "We just kept pushing it at them" Dolson said. "We just did what we wanted and finished it."

Geno Auriemma, has redefined the meaning of success in women's college basketball in his 28 years as head coach. He has won nine national titles and a host of other titles that go along with it. Over the last few years, there hasn't been any other women's team that can compare to U Conn. The lady Huskies remain head and shoulders above the rest of  womens' basketball programs. This team may be the best of all time. Who can dispute that? Especially after a remarkable 40-0 undefeated and championship season!
