Campaign Launched to Renew “Health Care Services Millage”

The “Genesee County Health Care Services Millage” provides basic affordable health care coverage for thousands of Genesee County seniors, hard-working adults and families

Speaker Jim Milanowski, GHP President and CEO

Local doctors, residents and community leaders officially launched the campaign to support the renewal of Genesee Health Plan’s “Health Care Services Millage” which provides affordable health care coverage for thousands of Genesee County hard-working adults, seniors and families. The campaign launch was held on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at the Flint Farmers’ Market.

Founded in 2001, the Genesee Health Plan (GHP) covers preventive health care services including doctor visits, mammograms, cancer screenings, outpatient mental health services, prescription drugs, labs and x-rays. GHP also provides dental care coverage for seniors and veterans, as many seniors and veterans do not have dental coverage. Every penny raised from the millage is spent on direct health care services for patients.

“The Genesee Health Plan takes a proactive approach to health care, making sure the Genesee County community has access to basic health care coverage and routine care,” said Dr. Traci Dantzler, dentist and Past President of the Genesee District Dental Society. “Without the Genesee Health Plan, thousands of Genesee County residents would go without primary health care coverage and life-saving health care services, including dental care for adults, seniors, veterans and families. Renewing the Health Care Services Millage will make sure the Genesee Health Plan can continue to provide quality health care coverage for those who need it most.”

Speaker Steven Elkins, Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce Director of Member Services

The Genesee Health Plan millage renewal will appear on the Tuesday, Nov. 6 ballot as the “Genesee County Health Care Services Millage Renewal.” If approved, the Genesee Health Plan will continue to provide basic affordable health care coverage for an additional seven years. Tax rates will stay the same as they are today and will cost the average homeowner about $50 per year. Genesee County voters first approved the millage in 2006 and renewed it in 2012. No money goes to administrative costs, and there is strict independent oversight to ensure taxpayer dollars are being spent wisely and with transparency.

“The Genesee Health Plan has served one in five Genesee County residents over the last 17 years, which means you probably know a friend, family member, coworker or neighbor who has been served by the health plan,” said Jim Milanowski, GHP President and CEO. “GHP helps hard-working adults who may work two or three jobs but don’t receive health care coverage from their employer or those who may have recently lost a job. We need to renew the Health Care Services Millage so we can make sure our neighbors, friends and co-workers are covered.”

The renewal is endorsed by community organizations and individuals including the Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce.

“We know how important Genesee Health Plan is to our community, including its impact on small businesses, their employees, coworkers and families,” said Steven Elkins, Flint and Genesee Chamber of Commerce Director of Member Services. “We encourage Genesee County voters to consider voting yes on the millage renewal this November.”
