Big Brothers Big Sister of Flint and Genesee County Annual Mentoring Inspiration Event to commemorate National Mentoring Month and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

In commemoration of National Mentoring Month and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint and Genesee County hosts its Annual Mentoring Inspiration Event.

The purpose of the annual Mentoring Inspiration Event is to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy through the promotion of mentorship and service in our community. This year’s theme, in conjunction with activities of the Mentoring Collaborative, is The Movement. The Moment. The Mentorship. The event will feature the agency’s newest initiative; Just A Kid from Flint.

The program is scheduled to begin promptly at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom on the actual Dr. King holiday; Monday, January 18, 2021.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. George E. Ross, president emeritus of Central Michigan University. Ross believes in the transformative power of education on individual lives and the future of our communities, states and nation. With the powerful focus on students, Ross led CMU to rank among only 5% of U.S. universities in the highest two Carnegie Research classifications. Ross has more than 32 years of leadership experience in higher education administration.  He understands the challenges facing higher education institutions across the country. Moreover, he has successfully met the challenges and moved the institutions he has been privileged to serve in a positive
direction. In addition to his leadership responsibilities, he has actively mentored higher education administrators and students for more than three decades.

He was elected to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 2017. This honor has special meaning for Ross, who grew up in Flint, Michigan-where the worldwide foundation is located.

The program participants include agency volunteers and Bigs and Littles who will pay tribute to Dr. King’s Legacy. Forty-five year big brother, Craig Coney will host this year’s event.
