Flint, MI – In honor of the father figures who shape our lives, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint & Genesee
County (BBBS) is launching its 30 MENtors in 30 Days campaign—a volunteer recruitment initiative to highlight the “MEN” in mentor and encourage men, particularly men of color, to become mentors (“Bigs”).
The mentorship gap continues to widen—especially for boys of color—due to misconceptions about what it
takes to become a mentor. This campaign aims to raise awareness of the urgent need and break down
perceived barriers… with the end goal of recruiting 30 new Big Brothers during the month of June.
“Becoming a mentor is one of the most rewarding ways to serve your community,” said BBBS President & CEO Lisa Humphrey. “Whether you’re playing ball, sharing a slice or gaming together, it’s about spending time with a young person and showing up consistently. That time can open doors for them—not just now, but for the rest of their lives.”
Research shows that youth with a positive mentor are 20% more likely to attend college and 15% more likely to earn a higher income. Nationally, one in three kids grows up without a sustained, positive adult mentor. In Flint, that number is closer to one in two.
“We understand we can’t close the mentorship gap in one fell swoop,” Humphrey added. “But we know that
recruiting just 30 men in June can make a Big Impact on the boys and young men in our community.”
