The Genesee County Bar Association’s 2014 Liberty Bell Award was presented to Angie Hendershot of ABC12 News during the Bar Association’s Annual Law Day Luncheon on Friday, April 25, 2014. Ms. Hendershot shared with the student attendees that she began her community service when she was given the opportunity to follow Circuit Court Judge Robert E. Weiss. She advised the students in attendance to follow their hearts when choosing careers.
Angie Hendershot is a National Edward R. Murrow and Emmy winning reporter. In 2010, Ms. Hendershot reported on Baby Court, a program in Genesee County designed to help broken families come back together. Her series on Baby Court won two Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, two Emmy Awards, the American Judicature Society’s Toni House Journalism Award and the Wade H. McCree Jr Award for the advancement of justice.
In 2011, Ms. Hendershot received an Emmy, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and an Associated Press Award for best news documentary for her investigation into the death of four year old Dominick Calhoun. She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Weiss
Advocacy Center, an organization that works to prevent child abuse and help survivors become children again. Further, she is the co-founder and co-director of the Flint Diaper Bank which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to provided diapers to needy families free of charge.
The Liberty Bell Award honors local citizens and organizations who have contributed in an exemplary manner to their community and, by their conduct, served to advance the administration and cause of justice in the community. It started in Genesee County in the early
1960s and soon spread across the country. Today, hundreds of local bar associations bestow this distinguished award to deserving individuals and organizations who have contributed in an exemplary manner to advance the administration and cause of justice in our community.
