African American Quilters Guild Announces Coming Exhibit

African American Quilters Guild 30th Exhibit Coming Oct. 10-12, 2019

Guest Master Quilter, Juanita Yeager

The Flint African American Quilters Guild presents its 30th quilting exhibit “Looking Back, Going Forward” at the Flint Public Library, 1026 E. Kearsley St., Flint, October 10-12, 2019 in coordination with the Flint Festival of Quilts. Award winning textile artist, Juanita Yeager will show and talk about her work, Saturday, October 12, at 2 p.m.

According to Diana Young, President of the Flint African American Quilters Guild, For three decades we have shared the art and technique of various quilters. This year’s show will feature past traditional quilts and patterns and new contemporary forms of art quilting. Over 50 quilted items made by the Guild or on loan, including two quilts made by youth will be shown.” The exhibit can be viewed during library hours; 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, October 10, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, October 11 and 12.

Master quilter, Juanita Yeager,

This year’s master quilter, Juanita Yeager, is a quilt maker, educator and curator. She creates whole cloth quilts using water color pigment painted on silk broadcloth. Many of her quilts feature hand-painted flowers. Yeager has been making quilts since 1983 and teaching since 1990. She has shown and won awards at many of the largest quilt shows.

Her visit and program are funded in part by the Flint Public Library, Flint African American Quilters Guild and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Flint Alumnae Chapter.

Each year the guild creates a raffle quilt with proceeds helping to secure guest speakers and free quilting classes. This year’s quilt is a 30-year retrospective of traditional quilt patterns in red, black and green, the colors of the Flint African American Quilters Guild.

The Flint African American Quilters Guild teaches free classes for adults and children; Adult free classes Mondays, 1-4 p.m., and youth classes (ages 7-18) are Saturdays, 1-3pm.
