Council votes for Councilman Leon El-Alamin to remain on council

Written by Tanya Terry

Because of a recent vote of Flint City Council members, 1st Ward Flint City Councilman will remain in his seat in the midst of facing charges.

In a vote that occurred in the Governmental Operations Committee on Wednesday, September 3, the council voted 3-2 against a resolution that would have asked Councilman Leon El-Alamin to voluntarily suspend his duties while his criminal case proceeded.

However, it is important to note the full council did not vote on the measure because the resolution failed to pass out of committee.

Councilmembers Tonya Burns and Jerri Winfrey-Carter voted for the suspension at the committee meeting. Councilmembers Jonathan Jarrett, Dennis Pfeiffer and Judy Priestly voted against the suspension. Councimembers LaShawn Johnson, Ladel Lewis and Candice Mushatt were absent during the vote, as well as El-Alamin being absent.

El-Alamin faces charges of felony assault with intent to do great bodily harm and misdemeanor domestic violence. He has not attended a meeting since he was arrested over two months ago. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 23 at 12 noon.
