City of Flint Charter changes the date that mayor sworn in

Written By Jameca Patrick-Singleton

According to the Flint City Charter, the winner of the 2022 mayoral election will be sworn in on a different date than had been in the past. Traditionally, the city of Flint Mayor-Elect is sworn in the Tuesday following the election. However, as per the charter that was adopted in 2017, the winner of the 2022 mayoral election will be sworn in following the certification of the governors’ race.

Section 4-102 of the Flint City Charter states: “Commencing with the election in 2022 as provided in 9-102, which governs Mayoral terms until 2022, the Mayor shall serve for a period of four (4) years commencing at 12 o’clock noon on Monday following the regular certification of the gubernatorial general election and shall serve in that office until the next general gubernatorial election and until the successor is elected and qualified”.

Though there is no way to indicate when the 2022 governors’ race will be certified. This typically occurs the later part of November.
