The Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), in collaboration with the attorney general and the Genesee County sheriff, has ordered Lockhart, the company that EGLE says is responsible for a chemical spill in the Flint River, to immediately stop using underground water disposal systems.
The company is also required to pump its wastewater into surface tanks and be disposed of off-site until the company properly addresses a 36-point action plan to correct the issues.
In a press conference that took place earlier this week, Attorney General Dana Nessel stated “I made a commitment to the residents of Flint that I would not stand by and allow any entity to endanger the health, safety or welfare of this community. Today I am making good on my promise”.
The order is authorized under Michigan’s Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act. A copy of the full order is available at Michigan.gov.
The Genesee County Health Department has a no-contact order on the river.
