Local barber hosts program and back to school giveaway for Flint youth

Written by Antonio Sweeney, contributing writer

Dwayne Harrington Sr, better known as Wayne The Barber, is a community leader, entrepreneur and man of God. He believes in going above and beyond with his work, whether it’s in the barbershop or out in the community. Among carrying those titles, he is a father of five and happily married to Tiana Harrington.

Harrington recently hosted a workshop for boys and girls with his program: How the Clippers Saved My Life. The program’s mission is to provide solutions for marginalized communities. It is built on empowering youth to grasp their potential while educating leadership development skills.

“Giving back to the community has always been a priority of mine, and God has allowed me to use my talents to bless others,” Harrington said.

The origin of how he got into barbering and becoming a public servant comes from his childhood.

“At the age of 12, my stepfather handed me some clippers and taught me the basics of cutting hair,” Harrington said. “It was way of keeping me off the streets and doing something productive. He died a year after.  So, he couldn’t see the man I am today. So. that’s what inspired my program.”

The program has since then reached youth ages from  9 to 17 years old with the help of local schools and organizations in the Flint and Genesee County area.  It features guest speakers, basic barbering skills, networking opportunities and social skills for the youth.

But his work doesn’t stop there. On Sunday,  August 29th, 2021 he will be hosting his 10th Annual Back to School giveaway. The event takes place at Aristotle’s Barber and Beauty Supply, 111 W. 2nd St, Flint, MI 48502, in downtown Flint.

There is a lot that takes place behind the curtain. Harrington would like to credit his wife Tiana for being his #1 supporter and business partner.

“Without her, there would be no Wayne The Barber. She’s been here through it all.”

The power couple are public servants in the day and full-time parents and grandparents, which is remarkable.

“My main goal is to serve and lead by example for my kids to show them what a community impact is all about.”
