Garlin Gilchrist II Sworn In As Michigan’s First Black Lt. Governor

Garlin Gilchrist II is Michigan’s first Black Lieutenant Governor.  Gilchrist was sworn in to office Jan. 1 along with Gretchen Whitmer, who was sworn in as the 49th governor and the state’s second-ever female governor.  Gilchrist, 36 was born in Detroit.  As lieutenant governor, Gilchrist is the second-ranking official in the state behind the governor. Gilchrist has a background in progressive politics and computer programming.

Community celebrations featuring Gov. Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Gilchrist have been planned for locations around the state.  Both Whitmer and Gilchrist have a planned stop at the Flint Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Jan. 12 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
