$235,000 grant to provide affordable housing to Flint residents

FLINT—Congressman Dan Kildee, Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus,  announced on Thursday May 5 that Metro Community Development will receive a $235,000 federal grant to help develop affordable housing and promote good-paying jobs in Flint.

This grant, through the federal NeighborWorks program, is funded through the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which Congressman Kildee voted for, and was signed into law, in March. NeighborWorks is a public nonprofit organization established by Congress in 1978 to help communities develop and preserve affordable housing, revitalize, sustain neighborhoods and create good-paying jobs.

“I am proud to announce this federal grant for Metro Community Development that will help promote affordable housing in Flint,” Kildee said. “Investing in our neighborhoods and creating local jobs helps to make our community safer and stronger. Every family, regardless of their zip code, should have access to safe and affordable housing.”

“We are so grateful for this grant approved by NeighborWorks America,” said Brian G. Glowiak, CEO of Metro Community Development.

“This critical funding supports our core mission of fostering small business development, preparing families for homeownership, creating and preserving affordable housing, and advancing efforts throughout Genesee County to reduce homelessness,” Glowiak added. “Last year Metro helped 290 business clients with technical consulting, created 41 new homeowners and assisted 324 families with financial literacy and credit counseling. We appreciate Congressman Kildee’s leadership efforts in advancing the federal appropriation to support NeighborWorks,”

Congressman Kildee has worked to strengthen neighborhoods in communities across mid-Michigan. In 2021 and 2020, Kildee announced two additional NeighborWorks grants to promote affordable housing in Flint. Congressman Kildee also previously announced $1.2 million in federal housing grants to help support and promote affordable, safe housing opportunities for families and seniors impacted by the coronavirus.
