But, Vee Jay Records paved the way for Motown and those that followed. Vee Jay Records was founded in Gary, Indiana in 1953 by Vivian Carter and James C. Brackens, a husband-and-wife team. It was a diverse recording company, producing blues, r & b, jazz, gospel and even country.
Vee Jay Records was the first American label to sign the Beatles. Artists that recorded on the label were Jimmy Reed, #You Don’t Have to Go”, The Spaniels, “Baby It’s you”, The Dells, “Oh, what a night”, Jerry Butler, “For your Precious Love”, Betty Everett, “You’re No Good” and many more.
