MCCEA Faculty Union files appeal after controversial lawsuit against the Mott Community College Board of Trustees ended in favor of Board

Flint, MI — August 28, 2025 — The Mott Community College Education Association (MCCEA) Faculty Union  filed an appeal (Case number: COA #376992) with the Michigan Court of Appeals on August 25, 2025 in response to a recent ruling regarding its lawsuit against the Mott Community College Board of Trustees over the process used in the appointment of Shaunda Richardson-Snell as president.
“Our decision to appeal is rooted in our commitment to ethical leadership and accountability,” said Brian Littleton, President of the MCCEA Faculty Union. “It’s about protecting the values of fairness, integrity, and transparency that our faculty, staff, and students deserve.”
The appeal was filed just one day before the Board of Trustees appointed Santino Guerra to fill the vacant seat left by former Trustee Janet Couch, who resigned in July amid controversy.
A lawsuit filed earlier in 2025 alleged a conflict of interest involving Former Mott Community College Trustee Janet Couch’s daughter, who was accused of being involved in  a real estate deal with College President Shaunda Richardson-Snell. The faculty union also filed a formal complaint alleging racially insensitive remarks on Couch’s social media.
“We welcome the opportunity to work with Trustee Guerra,” said Mott Community College Education Association President Brian Littleton. “We hope his appointment to the  Board of Trustees  brings a renewed commitment to openness and principled oversight of the college.”
The MCCEA Faculty Union stated they remain steadfast in their mission to uphold ethical governance, advocate for fair and transparent leadership, and ensure the voices of faculty, staff, and students are respected in shaping the future of Mott Community College.

Additionally, Mott Community College shared the following statement with the Courier:

“Mott Community College is aware a notice of appeal has been filed. The College has received no pleadings of that appeal. When received, Mott Community College and its Board of Trustees will respond pursuant to Michigan law and Michigan Court Rules in a timely fashion.”
