JURY CONVICTS FLINT MAN OF 15 FELONIES INCLUDING TORTURE AND UNLAWFUL IMPRISOMENT IN 2020 VIOLENT ASSAULT

FLINT – Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said a Flint man was convicted on August 19 after a
five-day jury trial related to a violent assault against a woman in 2020.

The jury found Kevin Lamar Spence, 36, guilty of 15 felonies including torture, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, unlawful imprisonment and multiple firearms charges.

According to the police investigation and testimony at trial, on December 22, 2020, Spence forced the victim into a vehicle and drove around Flint for 7-9 hours. During this time, he shot the victim at least eight times with at least two shots in her chest. Including the gunshot wounds, the victim had a total of 14 wounds including a shattered wrist and other injuries to her forearm, shoulder, hands, chest and abdomen.

After the assault, Spence left the victim in the car and then fled to Georgia. The victim was able to get out of the vehicle and convinced a nearby homeowner to call 9-1-1. Spence was later extradited from Georgia to Genesee County to face trial.

“I want to thank and acknowledge the hard work of my dedicated staff including my trial division Bureau Chief Andrea Legendre, support staff, the victim advocate, and police in seeing this case through to a successful and just conclusion,” said Prosecutor Leyton after the verdict was read.

“This defendant is a very dangerous and very violent individual with a lengthy criminal history,”
Prosecutor Leyton added. “We will be strongly advocating for a lengthy prison sentence because the only way to ensure this defendant is not a threat to our community is to put him behind
bars.”
