Juneteenth events lit up the city

Written by Jameca Patrick-Singleton
The city of Flint celebrated Juneteenth with weeklong events throughout the city. The week included a pre-launch celebration, peace garden event, taste of unity affair and an community event honoring the life and community contributions of Mother E. Hill Deloney.
Saturday June 15 displayed the most Juneteenth activities this year, including a concert featuring Midnight Star, James Fortune, Big Daddy Kane and RL & Q. Another concert with Flint’s own Mama Sol also took place. Additionally, Comma Bookstore hosted an event in the alley that brought together vendors, music and artists such as Gwen Pennyman. There were also multiple rooftop parties and a vendor fair in the flat lot.

The closeout of Juneteenth was just as festive with the honorary renaming of Spencer Street to Claressa Shields St.
The final Juneteenth event of 2022 was the 50th Annual Traditional Juneteenth Celebration and Parade with Mother E. Hill Deloney.
