HAP CareSource Sponsors Meals at Shelter of Flint

FLINT, May 1, 2025 – HAP CareSource, a Michigan based, mission-driven health plan, is sponsoring meals throughout May at Shelter of Flint’s 74-bed family emergency shelter, helping ensure that families experiencing homelessness have reliable access to healthy food.

Sponsoring meals for the Shelter of Flint helps address food insecurity while providing stability and security to those who need it most,” said Sarah Musser, HAP CareSource Michigan Market President. “Our support goes beyond nourishment; it’s about helping individuals regain a foundation to rebuild their lives. Together, we are building a more resilient Flint, one meal at a time.”

Shelter of Flint meets the nutritional needs of shelter clients by providing three meals a day and an organized snack. As food costs rise, community partnerships have become critical to sustaining this support.

“Thanks to the support of HAP CareSource, Shelter of Flint is here to ensure that all of the families in our shelter, including the 37 children who will sleep there tonight, receive the nutritious meals they need and, indeed, rebuild their lives,” remarked Shelly Hofman, Shelter of Flint Vice President & COO. “We owe a debt of gratitude to HAP CareSource for their dedication to caring for the welfare of families in our community,”

Food insecurity – the state of being without reliable access to enough affordable, nutritious food – is a serious problem in our community. For individuals and families facing homelessness, the problem is exacerbated. Many Shelter of Flint clients are receiving consistent, healthy meals for the first time. Too often parents must choose between keeping a roof over their heads or feeding their children healthy meals. Those who are without a home lack the ability to prepare meals and, if they can buy food at all, the only options are usually inexpensive and unhealthy fast food.

Shelter of Flint, which has been in operation since 1983, envisions a community where everyone has the opportunity to live in safe, sustainable housing. For further information about Shelter of Flint, visit shelterofflint.org.
