Flint Police Officer Charles Redmond has died following an apparent self-inflicted gunshot outside of Trinity Assembly of God church. According to police, Redmond took his own life in the church parking lot around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8.
In 2023, Redmond had been accused of punching and kicking a man who was thought to have at swung at an officer while two other officers restrained the man. Genesee County prosecutors dropped the assault charges. Redmond was given training and counseling and later received honors for his job performance.
The City of Flint issued the following statement regarding Redmond’s death.
“With a heavy heart, the Flint Police Department is reporting the death of Officer Charles Redmond. His death is being investigated by the Michigan State Police as a suicide.
“Officer Redmond was a beloved member of the Flint Police Department. He was hired on December 20, 2020. At the time of his death, Officer Redmond and his K9 partner, ‘YCE,’ were assigned to the K9 Unit.
“Officer Redmond received Officer of the Month awards for outstanding job performance in April 2025, March 2025, and April 2024. The Department recognized Officer Redmond as an honest, hardworking, dedicated, trustworthy and courageous officer.
“Officer Redmond’s loss is deeply felt by his fellow officers, the Department, and the community he served. He will be sincerely missed.”
Multiple sources stated Redmond, who was on active duty at the time of his death, had recently been struggling with personal and health-related issues.
