Flint couple being sent to trial for alleged child abuse

Flint and Detroit Police Officers Jared and Liana Shaw, who are charged with alleged child abuse in May, will be going to trial. Both officers were charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors, including the charges assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation, second-degree and third-degree child abuse.

Allegedly, the officers committed the crimes to Liana Shaw’s 12-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter in the married couple’s Flint home on March 1.

Their son reportedly tried to intervene when the couple had been fighting earlier.

According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, the son then went to school upset and called his grandmother, who brought him home. After that, Jared Shaw, his stepfather, allegedly threw a backpack at him. Liana Shaw also threw a book at her daughter, resulting in the felonious assault – assault with a dangerous weapon charge. Additionally, the accusations include both Jared and Liana putting Liana’s two children in chokeholds.

The children’s grandmother and Liana’s Shaw’s mother was the one who reported the alleged abuse when she saw it, leading Flint Police Department investigation.

As a result of the investigation, the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office filed the charges.

Liana Shaw’s children have been removed from the home they were in and have been living with their grandmother.

Additionally, both officers are currently suspended from the Detroit Police Department.

The couple was off duty at the time of the alleged crimes.
