The Democracy Defense Project is a new organization led by a bipartisan group of former elected officials and leaders in eight states. The board in Michigan consists of former Michigan governor Jim Blanchard, a Democrat; former Michigan governor John Engler, a Republican; former Lt. Gov. John Cherry, a Democrat; and former Congressman and Michigan Senate Majority Leader, Mike Bishop, a Republican
The organization issued the following statement:
“Michigan’s election system is safe, secure and accurate. Now that the polls in both our time zones have closed, it is time for our dedicated elections professionals to complete the work they are trained to do, which is to accurately count all votes so voters can have full confidence in the outcome. It can take time to ensure all legal votes are accurately counted, and we may not know the results as quickly as we would like. We will know who won once this work is completed, and not before. And once the count is completed, Michigan voters can be confident in the results. So we urge calm, patience and restraint as this important work is done.”
