Councilman Eric Mays allowed to return to meetings despite suspension attempt

By Tanya Terry

Flint City Councilman can join Flint City Council meetings regardless of a 30-day suspension, according to an order issued by Judge B. Chris Christenson.

The order prevents the council from being able to execute the suspension until hearing is held.

Mays’ attorneys had filed a lawsuit following the suspension. The attorneys stated they believe the council was seeking to “prohibit the participation of a duly-elected councilman from performing the very duties he was elected to perform.”

Christenson was assigned to preside over the lawsuit.

Other council members had recently voted to suspend Mays because of “conduct unbecoming a council member” after Mays used profanity and criticisms at a meeting. The language was directed at fellow council members, as well as the mayor and an audience member.

The City of Flint has asked the court to dissolve the order and requested a hearing before Christenson.

Mays is involved in three pending court cases involving the City of Flint.

The hearing on the suspension has been scheduled for August 22.
