Burton Police investigating after 6-year-old boy allegedly shot by an 11-year-old

By Tanya Terry

An 11-year-old girl allegedly shot a 6-year-old boy at Burton residence, according to the Burton Police Department.

The bullet hit the young child in the leg.

Although no formal charges had been charged, at least one person was in custody Thursday afternoon.

As of Thursday, April 20, police were continuing to investigate the incident, and the 6-year-old was expected to fully recover.

On April 13, Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed Senate Bills 79, 80, 81 and 82 and House Bills 4138 and 4142.

Senate Bill 79 will protect children by requiring an individual to keep a firearm being stored or left unattended on a premise unloaded and locked with a locking device or stored in a locked box or container if it is reasonably known that a minor is or is likely to be present on the premises. The bill establishes a range of penalties for a violation.

Senate Bill 80 updates the state’s criminal code for safe storage of firearms for child access protection.

The bills, however, will not go into effect until 2024.

Protecting children from firearms continues to be a concern for many.
