Aiesha Lewis, community programs coordinator for events and education for the Flint Institute of Music, recently talked to the Courier about the Summer Stars Concert Series. The program was designed to showcase local talent from Flint and Genesee County.
“It’s really a way for us to give those performers a way to have a professional performance in our community,” said Lewis.
Lewis thanked the voters of Genesee County for approving the Genesee County Arts, Education and Cultural Enrichment Millage.
She said local residents and visitors really have a lot to look forward to this summer!
A rock band called Ultraviolet Five, consisting of five girls all under the age of 16, will be performing on August 13 above the Flint Farmers’ Market.
“They are a group of five young girls that really rock out,” said Lewis
The series runs once a month throughout the summer.
Lewis reemphasized that the program is important because it gives young performers a professional opportunity to highlight their skills and build confidence in their careers.
She notes this is the third year she has coordinated the series and mentioned that a dancer from the second year returned to participate again.

Lewis’s favorite part of coordinating the shows is witnessing how empowered the students feel when the community supports them.
“Downtown is so vibrant already,” she said. “It really just adds an extra element of music to the space downtown.”
The event is free, requires no registration or ticket and welcomes anyone looking for live music or a night out downtown.
Lewis also noted that chairs, food and drinks are typically available for the shows.
The series is also generously funded by the CS Mott Foundation.
