Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Flint Unites Community to End Breast Cancer As We Know It

Flint, MI — October 1, 2025 — Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the United States, and more than 319,750 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2025. For more than 30 years, the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer has united communities across the nation in an effort to end breast cancer as we know it, for everyone.

This year, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer of Flint will take place on Saturday, October 11 at the DDA Flat Lot (125 E Kearsley, Flint), providing a supportive community for breast cancer survivors and metastatic breast cancer thrivers, caregivers and families alike.

Since 1993, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer events in communities across the country have raised approximately $1 billion to support breast cancer research, patient programs and direct services. These efforts are recognized in this year’s event theme: We are the movement. We are the hope. We are the future.

“Making Strides has grown into the nation’s largest and most impactful breast cancer movement over the past three decades,” said Ashley Wellman, Sr Development Manager at the American Cancer Society. “Through Making Strides, we are funding critical research and life-saving programs that will ensure a brighter future for everyone who is impacted by breast cancer.”

Local festivities begin at 8:30 a.m., featuring sponsor booths, photo opportunities, kids’ activities, community resources, music, dancing and a Survivor and Thriver tent. The 3- mile noncompetitive walk starts at 10:00 a.m., welcoming participants of all ages and abilities. Amigo Mobility will be onsite to provide mobility assistance for those who need it.

Registration is free and is available online at www.makingstrideswalk.org/flintmi, or participants can call 1-800-227-2345 to register over the phone. While participation is free, donations are strongly encouraged.

100% of net proceeds support the American Cancer Society’s breast cancer research and patient support programs in Flint, Genesee County and surrounding communities. In 2025, American Cancer Society has invested over $3 million in cancer research at Michigan State University’s Flint campus, helping to
drive innovation and hope right here in our community.

These funds help power life-changing services such as:

Road to Recovery – offering free rides for cancer patients to and from treatment.
NCIC – through which trained Cancer Information Specialists can answer questions 24/7, 365 days each year to empower you with accurate, up to date information to help you make educated health decisions.
Hope Lodge – giving patients a free place to stay during treatment away from home.

Making Strides of Flint would not be possible without the generous support of its sponsors and partners, including 92.7 WDZZ, Mott Community College and UAW, whose commitment to the cause helps make this impactful day possible.

“Making Strides is more than a walk – it’s a movement of hope, unity, and action,” said Ashley Wellman. “Every step taken and every dollar raised helps save lives and support those impacted by breast cancer.”
