Faith Foundation Resources to Protest Repeated Rejection of Summer Jobs for Youth

Flint, Michigan – The Faith Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering youth aged 16 to 19, announced  that it will host a protest on Wednesday, June 4, at 4:45 p.m. at Flint City Hall, in response to the City Council’s recent decision to vote down summer jobs programs for local youth on five occasions. This decision has left many young people without valuable work opportunities and resources to gain essential skills for their future.

The proposed summer jobs program aimed to provide meaningful employment for our youth, fostering professional development, building work experience, and instilling a strong work ethic. The Faith Foundation believes that access to summer employment is crucial for youth to prepare for their transition into adulthood, especially in a time when job experience is essential for future employment opportunities.

Moreover, providing summer jobs for youth is a significant step towards reducing community violence. Engaging young people in productive activities during the summer months keeps them occupied, promotes a sense of responsibility and fosters positive interactions within the community. When youth have jobs, they are less likely to engage in destructive behavior and more likely to contribute positively to their neighborhoods.

“Our youth are not just the leaders of tomorrow; they are integral parts of our community today. Denying them access to summer jobs is a disservice to their potential and aspirations,” said Angela Lots, executive director of the Faith Foundation. “The City Council’s repeated rejection of this program sends a message that our young people’s futures are not a priority.”

The protest is scheduled for June 4, 2025, at Flint city council meeting. It will bring together community members, youth advocates and affected families to raise their voices in support of summer job initiatives. This comes at a time when the community has also recently received an announcement that Job Corps will close, which was helping young people (ages 16-24) gain skills and knowledge for employment.  The Faith Foundation is calling on City Council members to reconsider their stance and prioritize the needs of the youth in our community.
