Flint Community Schools are currently operating $14 million in the red, according to superintendent Kevlin Jones.
Jones stated that because of this deficit, he has requested financial assistance from the state. This ask is supported by Dr. Pamela Pugh who currently serves as the president of the State of Michigan Board of Education.
Pugh released a statement that said in part “The fiscal challenge facing the Flint Community Schools demands immediate and decisive action. As Flint Community Schools stare down a daunting operational deficit in the upcoming fiscal year, coupled with the imminent depletion of the ESSER funds, we are on the brink of a full-blown financial emergency. This is not merely a budgetary shortfall; it’s a looming catastrophe that threatens the educational future of our children”.
According to Jones, relief from the state would help the school district to update facilities, amongst other things.
