Flint Board of Education rejects contract proposal from teacher’s union

Written By Jameca Patrick-Singleton
The Flint Board of Education has rejected a contract proposed by the United Teachers of Flint bargaining union during a special meeting held earlier this month, opting instead to request a counter proposal.
The agreement, which was unanimously voted down, included language around topics such as salary increases, staff recruitment and retention and the school calendar year.
The move is one the president of the United Teachers of Flint, Karen Christian said will make the district less competitive.
“We will continue to lose good teachers to neighboring districts that pay better” said Christian.
Christian also expressed extreme frustration at the district’s decision to reject a proposal that she said members of the union worked hard to put together.
‘We came to a tentative agreement” she said. “There shouldn’t have been anything to discuss. Teachers were very frustrated, very angry. Thinking that this was the time that the district would take care of us, and it didn’t happen.”
