Protecting yourself from customer service scams

When something goes wrong with a company, most of us turn to the internet for help—and scammers
know it. They create fake websites, buy ads to appear at the top of search results, and pose as helpful
customer service agents via phone, email, or even social media.
To protect yourself, don’t rely on search engines. Instead, log into your account directly or use contact
information from a recent paper statement. If you must go online, type the company’s web address into
your browser yourself—never click on links or ads.

If you think you’ve been targeted, report the scam to the real company using verified contact
information from their official website. Victims should also alert local police or file a report at IC3.gov.
