Simultaneous Revival expected to bring Flint area residents of all ages together to be renewed!

Written by Tanya Terry

Although the Great Lakes Baptist District Associations’ Simultaneous Revival is spearheaded by the Baptist Church, it is really intended to be a citywide affair and bring the whole city together!

The Great Lakes Baptist District Simultaneous Revival has been taking place for over 50 years!

This year, the district is featuring more youthful pastors than ever before, according to Pastor Rodney Williams Sr., chairman and vice-moderator of the Great Lakes Baptist District Simultaneous Revival.

Praise dancing and mime ministry geared towards the youth, as well as nationally known speaker Rev. Bernard Mitchell from Mississippi (known as “Mississippi Mitchell)” make up part of the youth emphasis. At 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6, at Metropolitan Baptist Tabernacle, Mitchell speaks and the youth activities take place.

Williams said it’s important to let the youth know “there is still a place for them in church,” as there is for everyone. Williams feels it’s important the older generations let the youth know they are also interested in their style of worship.

“Blended with ours, I feel that fulfills the call of unity in Psalms 133,” explained Williams.

The verse reads: “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”(KJV).

Every morning before the revival services, free breakfast will be served at the churches from 9-10 a.m. Williams said the “diverse” breakfast items may range from chicken, gravy and rice to fruit to more traditional breakfast items.

“Each day, we’ll have a full breakfast,” he said. “It will not be a continental breakfast.”

This year’s theme for the Passion Week Revival is “Embracing Change with a Never-Changing God.”

William talked to the Courier about what else attendees can expect to experience during Passion Week.

Noon-day worship services take place Monday, April 3-Thursday, April 6 after the meal. Williams said these services will actually start around 11:45 a.m.

On Monday, April 3, Rev. Richard Williams will be featured as the meditation speaker, and Rev. Roscoe Perry will be the main speaker, at Mt. Hermon Missionary Baptist Church (M.B.C).

“On Monday, we have a contrast between the senior and the youthful preacher,” stated Rev. Rodney Williams. “Both of them are very charismatic.”

Rev. Richard Williams is a product of Louisiana, and Perry is a product of the state of Georgia.

On Tuesday, April 4, the meditation speaker will be Rev. Alexander Elie. Rev. Johnteris Tate will be the main speaker for the revival, taking place at Second Friendship M.B.C.

Second Friendship is the church Pastor Rodney Williams pastors. He said Elie and Tate are both younger, up-and-coming National Baptist preachers.

Elie is a pastor from Monroe, Louisiana, and Tate is from Los Angeles, California. Pastor Rodney Williams feels the service will be “very appeasing to the youthful crowd” and still open to everyone.

Rev. Marandalous Holland as meditation speaker and Rev. Joshua Daniels as main speaker will be featured at Mt. Calvary M.B.C.  on Wednesday, April 5. Pastor Rodney Williams said the two pastors are also relatively young.

“I’ve been around the Great Lakes District for 35 years and this is a changeover because most of our older preachers have retired or passed away,” he said.

Featured on Thursday, April 6, will be Rev. Walter Houston as meditation speaker and Rev. Clifford Mays as the main speaker. Houston and Mays are both senior pastors. Both are from Ohio.

“It will be a very spirit-filled day!”

The revival services are being held in remembrance of four pastors who went home to be with God: Rev. Patrick Sanders Sr,. Rev. Andre Williams Sr., Dr. James Kennedy and Dr. Lewis Randolph.

Most of the association’s churches will also have their own revivals.

A Good Friday Service takes place at noon Friday, April 7 at Antioch Baptist Church. Rev. Christopher D. Taylor will preach about “The Seven Last Sayings From the Cross.” The service reflects on each word Jesus said on the cross prior to his death and will also feature other speakers from all over the country. Free breakfast will again be served.

Antioch Baptist Church was the church of founder of the Great Lakes Baptist District Association, the late Dr. L.W. Pryor.

Rev. Allen Overton currently serves as pastor of the Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church and is moderator of the Great Lakes Baptist District Association. According to the association’s website, he has been a leader of God’s people for over 17 years!

There will be a free-will offering at each service. No registration is required to attend any of the revival services.
