Both the City of Flint and Genesee County have appointed new top election officials.

One Monday December 5, 2022, Flint City Council voted 7-0 to name Davina Donahue, who had been serving as interim clerk since October 1, to the post permanently. Flint city clerks are appointed by the city council and have 5-year contracts. At the end of the five years, council can either offer a new 5-year contract or select a different clerk. Donahue’s first term is from January 1, 2023- December 31, 2027.

Donahue offered appreciation to the Council for offering her the position and stated “I appreciate your support. I will try my hardest not to disappoint you or to let you down”.

Just one day after the Flint City Council named Donahue as the City of Flint Clerk, Genesee County Circuit Court Judges named Commissioner Domonique Clemons as the new Genesee County Clerk/Register. Clemons was selected by the judges after participating in a non-public interview process. According to Chief Circuit Judge Deacon Beagle, the judges were very impressed by Clemons and his knowledge of the clerk and register offices. Clemons is filling the seat once occupied by John Gleason, who stepped down earlier this year as a part of a plea agreement. It is an elected position with two years remaining. If Clemons chooses to continue in this role after the next two years, he will have to run for the seat in 2024.

Commissioner Clemons is a current commissioner who won re-election in the November 8 general election. The County Board of Commissioners will be required to select a successor to fill his seat on that board.
